Today's point of sale systems keep all the transactions performed daily in a database. This database grows and grows as sales are entered into the system. From this database comes the raw information that is used to create the multitude of reports created by the software.

By searching this database, the software package can then pull the raw data and form it into understandable and readable reports. Storing data for a long period of time allows for historical reports for comparisons and trend analysis.

In many cases reports can be set to run automatically by the software. Most often this is done for the reports that you want daily. In other cases you will manually take the report when you are ready to view/print it.
